Easter in the Bible
Easter is when Christians celebrate Jesus
coming back to life after being buried,
according to events in the Holy Bible. In the
Book of Luke, women come to tend Jesus’ body and
find his tomb empty three days after his
crucifixion (Luke 24: 2). All Jesus’ disciples
are amazed, as they had expected Jesus to be
dead (Luke 24:12).
Matthew’s account of the same story has Jesus
meet the disciples on the road immediately
following the discovery of the empty tomb
(Matthew 28:8). Jesus tells the disciples in
John’s version that he has ascended to the
Father (John 20:17).
“Ascend” simply means being lifted up to God
for a new life in heaven. “Resurrection,” or
rising from the dead, has a similar meaning.
Christians believe that all who believe in Jesus
will ascend into heaven as Jesus does in the
Bible. Easter is the day when Christians
celebrate Jesus’ eternal life, and their own by
believing in him.
